Fort Gillem redevelopment moves forward in Forest Park By Daniel Silliman Henry Daily News (GA) April 2, 2007The possibilities have opened up in the redevelopment of Fort Gillem, and the public and redevelopment authorities are thinking they want a little bit of everything. The redevelopment’s second phase — planning — took a big step forward late last month when the Federal Emergency Management Agency decided it didn’t want 300 acres in the center of the Forest Park fort. FEMA was only considering taking about 25 percent of the available land at the fort, but the land was in the middle of the closing military base and had forced the Local Redevelopment Authority to consider plans to build in disconnected and disjointed developments, said Shane Short, LRA chairman and president of the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce. “What they wanted was the very heart of the property,” Short said. “Now, this allows us to properly design the development without having to work around two or three sides of the property. It allows for us to put in a contiguous design.” ...
