City may choose Alameda developer If project falls through, the Navy could auction the property By Kelly Rayburn Oakland Tribune (CA) April 4, 2007 ALAMEDA - The city could be down to a final chance on Alameda Point.City Council members will meet today and could select a new developer for the sprawling former Naval Air Station on the Island's west end. The council - which will meet at 6 p.m. in City Hall in its capacity as the Alameda Reuse and Redevelopment Authority - will choose among three development companies after an original development team abandoned plans to build shops and homes on the old base a little more than six months ago. The decision could prove crucial.Ten years after the Naval Air Station closed, the Navy still owns the 700-acre property and, for now, is asking $108.5 million to sell it in one shot. But if another developer backs out of a project, there are indications that the Navy could turn to a different way of selling off the property - possibly through a public auction. ...
