Alameda Point bird refuge not a sure thing

Eli Saddler, the conservation director for Golden Gate Audubon, has logged many meeting hours on a quest to save a unique piece of Alameda property.

The reason: About 400 pairs of the California least tern, an endangered species that make their home from April to August on the southwest tarmac at Alameda Point, a former Navy base.

Berkeley-based Golden Gate Audubon recently has stepped up lobbying efforts to create a permanent refuge for the least tern, the endangered brown pelican and more than 150 other species at Alameda Point.

"Because of the lack of public access and a lack of activity out there, the wildlife has really taken over at Alameda Point," Saddler said. "Birds you may not see elsewhere for miles and miles you will see out there because of the sanctuary it provides."
