Army Base Options Oakland NovoMetro (CA) October 23, 2007Since its closure in 1999, the decommissioned Oakland Army Base, a plot of land sandwiched between freeways, the Port, and a wastewater treatment facility, has languished largely unused. More than half of the land was given to the Port, which they are using for expansion and a new intermodal rail terminal. On Tuesday, the City Council’s Community and Economic Development Committee will consider what to do with the remaining 165 acres belonging to the City. The City has flirted with different ideas for the land over the past few years. They’ve already made a commitment to an auto mall on a portion of the site. They spent two years negotiating with the Wayans Brothers for an ambitious, but ultimately unrealizable movie studio and retail development. The Hollywood moguls officially ended their negotiations with the City in August. The City Council has an important decision to make. They will have to craft a plan for the area that maximizes jobs and tax revenue from the acreage while adhering to pre-existing visions put forth in the City’s 1998 General Plan, and also considering the needs of the neighboring West Oakland community. ...
