Army Engine Plant on auction block

STRATFORD — Let the bidding begin. But this is no ordinary auction: A $1 
million entrance fee is required to take part.

Losers will get their money back, but the winner becomes the developer 
of one of Stratford's prime pieces of waterfront property, a site long 
envisioned as the key resource for economic growth over decades to come.

The prize is the 79-acre Main Street property where the Army Engine 
Plant once stood.

The U.S. Army, which owns the land, and the federal General Services 
Administration on Monday kicked off the on-line bidding process for the 
property.

It is the next step in renewed efforts to sell and redevelop the 
contaminated engine plant, and comes nearly two months after more than 
150 potential buyers from across the nation and Canada attended a 
special conference for prospective bidders in Hartford.
