Very briefly, part of Hamilton AFB was closed and transfered, through the General Services Administration, pending certification that the transfer parcel was clean. However, the transfer parcel was not cleaned - the landfill was contaminated and costly to remediate, but not an immediate threat to public health - so it became the target of repeated Congressional attempts to aid the transfer. It has been complicated by apparent collusion with developers, opposition to development, and a variety of political issues that have created strange bedfellows. The remaining portion of Hamilton AFB included military housing, which has been used by Navy families from Bay Area bases, and the airstrip, which was used by the Army Reserve. The closure of "Hamilton Army Air Field" is on one of the BRAC lists. I can tell you more or put you in touch with others. Again, I have a fat file on the subject at my office. Lenny | |
