A key factor in the presence of endangered species is the destruction of surrounding habitat that formerly supported those species. In Southern California, military bases - particularly Camp Pendleton - represent the only significant coastal lands without a high level of development and human access. That is, were it not for Pendleton, Los Angeles and San Diego would have merged by now. I believe that the dunes at Fort Ord will be a state or county park, not Federal. Lenny Siegel | |
