Subject: Chemical Warfare Agents in Natick, MA Chemical Warfare Agents in Natick, Massachusetts Documents reviewed at a public library indicate that very small (milliliter) quantities of mustard gas were incinerated onsite at the Natick R & D Laboratories. The practice was, "... discontinued due to the generation of excessive smoke." The document describes materials used in biological, animal, radiation, and chemical testing, including the presence of 3 MegaCuries of radioactive material. The radioactive materials include iodine and cesium but it is mostly cobalt 60 slugs. I have since been informed by the Natick Lab's project manager that the document is classified, despite being on a library's shelf. Is this common? I presume that there must be some controls on releasing classified materials to libraries. |
