BOGS TAKEN OFF CONTRACT As I previously reported, Congress passed special legislation enabling the Air Force to compensate cranberry growers on Cape Cod for crops lost this past year due to ethylene dibromide contamination from Otis Air National Guard base. The $800,000 authorized this year probably won't do the job, since Ocean Spray Inc., the processor and marketer, took the 75 contaminated acres of bog off contract. According to the Cape Cod Times, this will not only cost the grower, but the cities of Falmouth and Mashpee, which appear to receive a total of more than $100,000 a year from the cranberry harvest. At this time it is unknown whether the Air Force will further compensate any of the affected parties. For more information, see the Cape Cod Times webpage, http://www.capecodonline.com.
