Ancestral-home suit by Indian tribes to be heard first By Ronald W. Powell UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER May 12, 2000 SAN DIEGO -- A federal judge in Washington, D.C., issued a temporary order yesterday preventing the Navy from transferring ownership of land at the old Naval Training Center to the city of San Diego until a hearing is held later this month.=20 The order was granted in connection with a lawsuit filed Dec. 17 by the Campo Band of Mission Indians and the Kumeyaay Tribal Coalition. The Indians contend that the 500-plus acres at the training center are part of their ancestral homeland and that title should be transferred to them. http://www.uniontrib.com/news/metro/20000512-0010_3m12ntc.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can find archived listserve messages on the CPEO website at http://www.cpeo.org/lists/index.html.
