Powell UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER May 12, 2000 SAN DIEGO -- A federal judge in Washington, D.C., issued a temporary order yesterday preventing the Navy from transferring ownership of land at the old Naval Training Center to the city of San Diego until a hearing is held later this month. The order was granted in connection with a lawsuit filed Dec. 17 by the Campo Band of Mission Indians and the Kumeyaay Tribal Coalition. The Indians contend that the 500-plus acres at the training center are part of their ancestral homeland and that title should be transferred to them. A hearing on the lawsuit is scheduled for May 23, and the judge suspended transfer of the property from the Navy to the city in the interim. The City Council had been scheduled to accept the transfer of 279 acres of Naval Training Center land at a May 15 hearing.
