Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Fences at UXO sites |
This query comes from a state regulator. Please respond either to the CPEO list or to me personally. Lenny Siegel 1. Does anyone have information regarding what kind of fences are used throughout the U.S. to prevent human intrusion at OB/OD sites that have UXO present on the ground surface? I am especially interested in finding out which OB/OD sites have been required to install 6- foot or higher chain link fences (with 3 strands of barbed wire on top). I am particularly interested in base closure sites where the DOD retains ownership of the land within the fenced area because it contains UXO, DOD has transferred the land outside the fenced OB/OD area for unrestricted access (i.e., recreation), and the fence is the only mechanism to prevent human intrusion. In other words, the public has free access to the land on the other side of the fence and there is no security force to patrol the fence line. 2. Does anyone have information regarding the effectiveness of 4 ft, 5-strand barbed wire fences for deterring or controlling human entry into UXO sites? 3. Does anyone have information regarding evaluations or studies of the effectiveness of particular types of fences for controlling or deterring human entry into UXO sites? -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 222B View St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/968-1126 lsiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can find archived listserve messages on the CPEO website at http://www.cpeo.org/lists/index.html.
