The Institute for Science and Interdisciplinary Studies
(ISIS) is seeking a Project Coordinator/Director:

I. The Military Waste Cleanup Project (MilWaste) works with citizens,
citizen-scientists and regulatory and military officials on helping
communities affected by military pollution achieve effective environmental
cleanups. The Project is building a large-scale
National Technical Experts Network (NTEN), which will network scientists
and knowledgeable citizens working with communities affected by military
pollution. The Military Waste Cleanup Project (MilWaste)
Coordinator/Director is the principal person responsible for the smooth
operation of the project, is responsible for organizing the NTEN by
building an active, collaborative network. The Coordinator/Director also
supervises project staff and work-study students assisting with the
project. She/he will perform the tasks necessary to maintain and improve
the funding of the project, as well as carry out the jobs prescribed by
funders and granting agencies.

II. Responsibilities:
 
* Build and maintain a national network of collaborators to join and
execute the NTEN project.
* Develop and maintain relationships with citizens, citizen organizations,
non-profit organizations, and professors and scientists at community
colleges, colleges and universities that will be the NTEN.
* Budget and Grants Management: Maintain all budget records, track expenses
and income, prepare grant proposals and progress reports.
* Organize and coordinate public meetings, national-level conferences and
workshops.
* Review, interpret and evaluate environmental
engineering data from military installations.
* Communicate with citizens and technical experts on cleanup and
environmental matters in a polite, courteous way.
* Update and manage mailing and member databases.
* Manage e-mail discussion lists and website.
* Write and edit newsletters for citizen organizations
* Manage the Project, supervise the project assistant and work-study
students and interns, process requests for information and organize mailings.
* Manage and update electronic discussion lists and website.
* Conduct research on relevant topics.


III. Basic Knowledge:


Requires a Bachelors degree (Masters or Doctorate preferred), preferably in
sciences or health science, with a good knowledge of chemistry,
environmental science, hydrology, and/or public health. Excellent oral and
written communication skills and computer skills (word processing,
spreadsheets, database management, graphics, web), the ability to
communicate effectively with foundations, the press,
citizen organizations, scholars and students, ability to work
independently, flexibility and ability to manage multiple and diverse
tasks.


IV. Knowledge/Personal traits:

* Minimum of two (2) years experience working in the
environmental/nonprofit field.
* Familiar with the problems and challenges associated with the environment
and the military.
* Ability to work effectively with citizens' and other organizations
working on similar causes.
* Comfortable with networking and interaction with people of diverse
backgrounds. 
* Meeting and conference planning experience desirable.
* Academic, work or volunteer experience in the philosophy of
science/science studies, military and the environment, public health and
the environment, and similar progressive causes is desirable.
