COMUNICADO DE PRENSA

Varios miembros del Comite Pro Rescate y Desarrollo de Vieques (CPRDV) y la
Juventud Viequense Unida (JVU) ocuparon la oficina de la Secretaria de la
Salud, Carmen Feliciano de Melecio, para demandar la informacion
actualizada y completa sobre la situacion de salud en la Isla Nena.
"Viajamos desde Vieques para dramatizar, aqui en la Oficina de la
Secretaria de Salud, la seria preocupacion sobre la salud del pueblo
viequense, mas ahora que la Marina amenaza con nuevos bombardeos en esta
semana," senalo Nilda Medina, portavoz del grupo.

Una docena de viequenses ocuparon la oficina de Feliciano a las 10:00 AM
para exigir que proveyera a la comunidad de Vieques la informacion
actualizada y completa sobre el cancer, la mortalidad general y especifica,
mortalidad infantil, incidencia de otras enfermedades.

Segun los viequenses, luego de que en 1997 se informo sobre la alta
incidencia de cancer en Vieques - 27% mayor que en Puerto Rico - el
Departamento de la Salud (DS), tres anos despues, solo presenta datos para
Vieques hasta el 1994 y admite que esos datos estan incompletos. El DS esta
seis anos atrasados, plantean los representantes de la Isla Nena. Indicaron
que se necesita la informacion actualizada para poder planificar los
servicios de salud dependiendo del numero de casos de cancer y teniendo los
datos actualizados sobre los tipos de tumores mas comunes entre los viequenses.

"Cada dia que pasa sin iniciar la limpieza de los mortales toxicos en la
parte este de Vieques, aumenta la probabilidad de que mas viequenses mueran
de cancer, de enfermedades respiratorias o de la piel, entre otros males
relacionados con la contaminacion militar. La informacion detallada y al
dia es vital para ayudarnos a plantear el grave peligro que el bombardeo
representa para nuestro pueblo," senalo Francisco Pimental, portavoz de la JVU.

Several members of the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques
(CRDV) and the Vieques Youth United (VYU) held a sit in this morning in the
office of the Secretary of Health, Carmen Feliciano de Melecio, to demand
updated and complete information about the health situation on the island
of Vieques.  "We travelled from Vieques to dramatize, here in the office of
the Secretary of Health, the serious concerns of our community for the
health of our people, especially at this moment when the Navy has announced
new bombing exercises to begin this week," expressed Nilda Medina,
spokesperson for the group.

A dozen Viequenses occupied Feliciano's office around 10:00AM to demand the
community of Vieques receive the most accurate and updated information
about cancer, mortality rates in general, infant mortality and the
incidence of other health problems.

According to the Viequenses, after the Department of Health (DH) informed
in 1997 about the high cancer rate in Vieques - 27% higher than the rest of
Puerto Rico - the DH, three years later, only presents data until 1994 and
admits that the information is incoplete.  The DH is six years behind on
its data, according to the Viequenses in protest.  They indicated that the
updated information is crucial for planning the necesarry health services,
that depend on the number of cancer cases and the types of tumors most
common among the Viequenses.

"Every day that goes by without the clean-up of the deadly toxics on the
eastern end of Vieques increases the probability of more Viequenses dying
of cancer, respiratory diseases or diseases of the skin, among other
problems associated with the military contamination.  Detailed and updated
information is vital to help us clearly state the grave danger that Navy
bombing practice represents from our people," expressed Francisco Pimental,
of the Vieques Youth United.
