Actividades especiales en Vieques anticipan marcha-concentracion y
desobediencia civil el 1 de octubre
Special activities previous to the marcha and civil disobedience actions of
October 1st Portavoces del Comite Pro Rescate y Desarrollo de Vieques
(CPRDV) y del Campamento Justicia y Paz anunciaron varias actividades de
protesta y concientizacion en los dias antes del 1ero de octubre, cuando se
espera una multitudinaria participacion en la Marcha-Concentracion en Apoyo
a la Desobediencia Civil en Vieques. El viernes, 29 de septiembre a las 7PM
en el Campamento Justicia y Paz, se presentara el documental, Cruzando
Fronteras, de la cineasta Sonia Fritz, sobre la participacion de la mujer
viequense en la lucha por la desmilitarizacion.

El sabado, 30 de septiembre se llevara a cabo una vigilia especial en el
Campamento Justicia y Paz, frente a la entrada de la zona de bombardeo
(Camp Garcia) comenzando a las 7 de la noche. Ademas del 
piquete frente al porton de la base - que por mas de un ano el CPRDV lleva
a cabo todos los sabados - varios musicos puertorriqueNos y viequenses
cantaran por la Paz de la Isla Nena. Ruben Bonano y Mercedes Perez de
Vieques y los canta-autores boricuas, Zoraida Santiago y Noel Hernandez
ofreceran su musica durante la vigilia.

Esa noche los organizadores de las acciones del dia siguiente, 1ero de
octubre, ofreceran detalles sobre la marcha-concentracion que comenzara a
las 11:00 AM en el balneario Sun Bay del barrio Esperanza.
A las 5:00 de la madrugada del domingo, se llevara a cabo una diana
anunciando las acciones del dia por todos los barrios. Segun Judith Conde,
de la Alianza de Mujeres Viequenses, "llevaremos un mensaje con musica de
plena por todo Vieques para exhortarle a nuestros conciudadanos a que
participen en las actividades del dia.''

Se espera la llegada a Vieques de cerca de mil personas durante el fin de
semana y las organizaciones comunitarias de Vieques estiman la
participacion de una cantidad similar de viequenses en la
marcha-concentracion. Segun Robert Rabin, uno de los portavoces del CPRDV,
las actividades de este fin de semana inician una serie de acciones que
tomaran las organizaciones de lucha en Vieques para paralizar las maniobras
que la Marina de Guerra de EU tiene programadas para el mes de octubre.

ACAMPARAN CIENTOS EN VIEQUES PARA ACTOS DEL 1 DE OCTUBRE

Varias areas de acampar han sido preparadas en Vieques para alojar a los
cientos de manifestantes que llegaran de la Isla Grande este fin de semana
para participar en la Gran Marcha - Concentracion en Apoyo a la
Desobediencia Civil del 1ero de Octubre.

Nilda Medina, representante del Comite Pro Rescate y Desarrollo de Vieques
en el Comite Organizdor para el 1ero de Octubre, seNalo que "... cuatro
zonas se han preparado para ubicar a los manifestantes durante el fin de
semana. En el balneario publico, Sunbay, hay espacio para mas de cincuenta
casetas y facilidades sanitarios basicos. El costo de este espacio es diez
dolares por caseta por noche. Otros dos espacios en el Barrio Esperanza han
sido habilitados y esperamos recibir unas delegaciones internacionales en
el Albergue Justicia y Paz en nuestro campmento del mismo nombre, frente a
los portones de la base militar."

Medina recalco la importancia de comunicarse con los organizadores de los
actos para coordinar el alojamiento y la participacion tanto en la
marcha-concentracion como en la desobediencia civil. Los viequenses
sugieren que las personas se movilicen hacia Vieques el viernes, 29 de
septiembre para participar en varias acitividades previas al 1 de octubre y
para facilitar el movimiento de la gran cantidad de personas que viajaran
en las lanchas entre Fajardo y Vieques.

Se les recuerda a los acampadores traer todo lo necesario para pernoctar en
condiciones rusticas: caseta, matres, funda de dormir, linterna, agua potable.

PRESS RELEASE

Spokesmen for the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques
(CRDV) and the Peace and Justice Camp announced several protest and
educational activities in the days leading up to the first of October, when
a large scale march and protest will take place here in support of civil
disobedience actions for peace on Vieques. On Friday, 29 September at 7PM
in the Peace and Justice Camp, the documentary film, Crossing fronteirs
(Cruzando fronteras), by filmaker Sonia Fritz, about the participation of
Viequense women in the struggle for demilitarization.

Saturday, 30 September, a very special vigil will be held at Peace and
Justice Camp, in front of the entrance to the bombing range (Camp Garcia),
beginning around 7PM. In addition to the lively protests in front of the
gates to the base - action taken by the CRDV every Saturday for over a year
- musicians from Vieques and the main island will sing for Peace on the
"lsla Nena" (Baby Island, nickname for Vieques). Ruben Bonano and Mercedes
Perez from Vieques and the singer/songwriters from Puerto Rico, Zoraida
Santiago and Noel Hernandez will offer their music during the vigil.

anunciando las acciones del dia por todos los barrios. Segun Judith Conde,

plena por todo Vieques para exhortarle a nuestros conciudadanos a que
participen en las actividades del dia.'' At 5:00 in the morning of Sunday,
an early moring wake up action, know in Spanish as a Diana, will move
through the different neighborhoods of Vieques announcing the actions of
the day. According to Judith Conde, of the Vieques Womens Alliance,"we will
take a message with Plena music throughout Vieques to urge our people to
participate in the protest activities of this day." Organizers of the
October 1st activities will offer details that night about the march and
protest that will take place the following day beginning at 11AM in the Sun
Bay Public Beach area in Esperanza.

Around a thousand people are expected to arrive in Vieques over the weekend
and the Vieques community organizations estimate the same number of
Viequenses will participate in the marcha and protest. Robert Rabin, one of
the spokesman for the CRDV indicated that the activities of this week mark
the beginning of a series of actions planned for October and designed to
create obstacles to Navy plans to carry out maneuvers during this period.

PRESS RELEASE

Several camping areas have been prepared in Vieques to house the hundreds
of protesters that will arrive from the main island this week end to
participate in the Concentration/March en Support of Civil Disobedience the
First of October.

Nilda Medina, representative of the Committee for the Rescue and
Development of Vieques (CRDV) on the October 1st Organizing Committee,
indicated that "...four areas have been prepared for protesters during the
week end. In the Public Beach (Sun Bay), fifty spaces are reserved for
campers at a cost of ten dollars per tent. Two other spaces have been
prepared in the Esperanza Sector and international delegates will stay at
the Peace and Justice Shelter in our camp of the same name, in front of the
gates to the Navy base.

Medina emphasized the importance of communicating with the organizers of
the activities about housing and participation in the activities here this
week end. The Viequenses suggested that those who can should travel to
Vieques beginning Friday, 29 September, to avoid problems of congestion due
to the large number of people who will travel in the Ferries between
Fajardo and Vieques on Saturday and Sunday. They also remind campers to
bring necesarry materials: tents, matresses, sleeping bags, flashlights and
drinking water.
