Danger under ground
Efforts to clear Camp Edwards of unexploded munitions draw national 
attention.

CAMP EDWARDS - They remain buried beneath residential neighborhoods in 
Southern California, and in the woods of the Upper Cape. 

Whether on the ground or deep below the surface, millions of rounds of 
unexploded ordnance, or UXO, remain on military bases across the 
country, and in neighborhoods where artillery and mortar target practice 
once took place. 

Some say there are more than 1,500 sites nationally where UXO still pose 
a safety and environmental threat. 

Among those, of course, is Camp Edwards, where the National Guard 
continues a methodical search for thousands of buried munitions, and the 
causes of billions of gallons of water pollution.

And it is here that the Pentagon has decided to establish what will be 
the national center of UXO detection and cleanup. 

Over the next six months, $8 million will be spent to make Camp Edwards, 
along with the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, the national home of 
UXO technology development. The dollars were added to the defense budget 
this spring by U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass.

Half of that money will be spent to develop technology to find the UXO. 
The other $4 million will be used to track how the buried artillery 
shells, mortars and other munitions have polluted groundwater.
