People trust NATO 'to do what is right' Kosovars who live with the effects of depleted uranium are barely consulted or counted, Steven Erlanger writes from Llozice, Yugoslavia. Scientists in white overalls, accompanied by NATO soldiers, collected soil samples this week near a bombed-out bridge on a well-travelled Kosovo road, but they did not tell Etrem Javori, who lives and works in the nearby village, what they were doing or why. Mr Javori and his family were not surprised; they are used to a policy of silence on the part of their former leaders. But they have heard the fuss about weapons reinforced with depleted uranium from TV news, even if they do not understand it. The sudden, furious and deeply political debate within NATO over the possible ill-effects of weapons reinforced with depleted uranium might not involve Kosovo. The people who presumably live with the effects of depleted uranium all year round, and not for six-month tours of duty - are barely consulted or counted.
