FEDERAL FACILITIES CLEANUP WORKSHOP: TECHNICAL INFORMATION TO: Individuals active and interested in technical topics in federal facilities cleanup. FROM: The Institute for Science & Interdisciplinary Studies (ISIS) DATES: July 13, 14 & 15, 2001 LOCATION: Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts REGISTRATION: There is no registration fee but pre-registration is required. A limited number of travel and support scholarships are available. ACCOMMODATIONS: Dormitory space is available on the Amherst College campus and can be reserved for $50 per night, which includes room and board. Contact ISIS for more details or to reserve a space (these accommodations are covered for travel stipend recipients). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Join state and federal government representatives; independent scientists; citizens and advisory board members living near federal facilities; installation representatives; and regulators to look at technical information needs and the role of citizen participation in the environmental cleanup process at Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Energy (DOE) facilities. The mission of the Workshop is to examine the roles of citizens, professional or technical experts, installation representatives, regulators, independent scientists and college professors in active cleanup through improving the understanding of technical topics at RAB, CAB and SSAB meetings. ISIS will use this information to structure the National Technical Experts Network (NTEN) and make it a useful tool for those involved in cleanup. The Workshop will consist of plenary sessions focused on matters of general interest and smaller breakout groups focused on more specific issues. ISIS is currently in the final stage of developing an agenda and we will make that public as it becomes available. Currently, topics to be covered include: - Risk Assessment Analysis - Technical Information Needs - Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) & Ranges: Cleanup Options & Opportunities - The Role of the Citizen-Expert - Finding the Resources in Diverse Communities - The Role of States & Tribal Governments in Cleanup - Using the World Wide Web to Access Information - High Level Nuclear Waste Disposal: Yucca Mountain - Privatization & Early Transfer - New Science Needed for Effective Cleanup A limited number of travel stipends are available.
