Monday, March 25, 2002 Portsmouth councilors hear favorable prognosis for cleanup at Pease Tradeport By MICHAEL GOOT Democrat Staff Writer PORTSMOUTH ? The City Council recently heard a relatively good prognosis for the cleanup of contaminated areas at Pease International Tradeport, but more work is still needed. Several areas at the former air base have been substantially cleaned, said David Strainge, Base Realignment and Closure environmental coordinator. Most of the contamination is associated with runoff of contaminants such as airplane gasoline. About $160 million has been spent on the Superfund cleanup. The Superfund Law, which was enacted in 1980, was intended to ensure businesses assumed liability for cleaning up sites where hazardous substances were dumped.
