Portsmouth councilors hear favorable prognosis for cleanup at Pease
Tradeport

PORTSMOUTH ? The City Council recently heard a relatively good prognosis
for the cleanup of contaminated areas at Pease International Tradeport,
but more work is still needed.

Several areas at the former air base have been substantially cleaned,
said David Strainge, Base Realignment and Closure environmental
coordinator.

Most of the contamination is associated with runoff of contaminants such
as airplane gasoline. About $160 million has been spent on the Superfund
cleanup. The Superfund Law, which was enacted in 1980, was intended to
ensure businesses assumed liability for cleaning up sites where
hazardous substances were dumped.
