Army won't burn depot stockpile Water-based method to neutralize arms at facility By Theo Stein Denver Post Environment Writer Thursday, March 28, 2002 - The Pentagon has chosen a novel water-based technology to neutralize 2,600 tons of mustard gas stored at the Pueblo Chemical Depot for the last 50 years. U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., said Army Undersecretary Pete Aldrich signed a memo Tuesday committing the Army to the water-based system - which is similar to municipal sewage treatment - instead of burning the chemicals in a special incinerator. Allard, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the Army also wants to expedite the cleanup of the depot, 15 miles east of Pueblo, so the weapons don't become a target for terrorists. Pueblo officials and environmentalists hailed the decision, which will be officially announced later this week.
