Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Utah overflights proposal |
Congressman James Hansen reportedly plans to put forward an amendment today, (Wednesday, May 1, 2002) in the full House Armed Services Committee mark-up of the Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2003, to override provisions of the Wilderness Act as they apply to the Utah Testing and Training Range, including the Dugway Proving Ground. The legislation would eliminate any restrictions on military overflights of wilderness areas in this part of Utah. It would also allow the continued deployment of communications and tracking equipment in wilderness areas, and it would prevent the Interior Department from engaging in any planning for such Utah wilderness without the prior concurrence of the Air Force. This amendment was NOT including in the Defense Department's Readiness and Range Preservation Initiative, as submitted to Congress on April 19, 2002.
