A 'show and tell' grenade Woman finds it, takes it to work By Teresa Stepzinski Morris News Service BRUNSWICK -- A live rust-encrusted hand grenade was safely recovered Monday after a Brunswick woman who told police she found it at the historic St. Simons Island Lighthouse took it to her job to show co-workers. The grenade was eased from the center console of the woman's car by a member of an explosive ordnance disposal team from Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in St. Marys. After securing the explosive in an ammunition-style box, the team took it away to be detonated at a safe disposal site, Brunswick police said. Police had closed the auto parts store plus an adjacent business and sealed off the parking lot as well as two neighboring streets for about 90 minutes after Asia Portis reported that she'd found the grenade and had it inside her car. "She told us that she'd found it at the lighthouse, right up next to the building, in the grass on St. Simons Island about 1 a.m.," said Sgt. Kevin Jones, Brunswick Police Department spokesman. "She said that she'd just been out walking when she saw it in the grass and picked it up because she didn't want any kids to get it."
