Veteran fights for information about biological, chemical tests Campaign: Former Navy corpsman, Kansas congressman to request full disclosure of tests Last Modified: 5:03 a.m. 7/8/2002 By Matt Moline Special to The Capital-Journal After retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1982, Topekan Jim Druckemiller never paid much attention to the periodic revelations in various news media of scandals in all the armed forces. "The press had been pretty much giving the military a going over ever since Vietnam," Druckemiller said last week. "Then there were the debacles in Somalia, mostly caused by politicians, and the constant horror stories of the Department of Defense paying $750 for a toilet seat and things like that." So Druckemiller was reluctant to talk to a California investigative journalist who called two years ago with a new set of unsettling allegations. According to the journalist, the Defense Department had deliberately exposed Druckemiller's destroyer crew aboard the USS Power to dangerous biological and chemical contaminants 32 years ago as part of a series of secret military tests, known as Project SHAD.
