No fuel found in soil near Fallon Tests make pipeline-leakage theory unlikely Frank X. Mullen Jr. RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL 9/23/2002 10:24 pm No fuel residue was found in analysis of soil samples taken by the state at the site of a suspected jet fuel pipeline leak in Fallon, officials said Monday. That means it?s unlikely fuel was leaking into the soil in that area, officials said. Jet fuel is among the focuses for investigators who are examining a cluster of 16 childhood cancer cases in Fallon. State environmental officials ordered the tests Sept. 10 after utility workers reported petroleum smells near the jet fuel pipeline. ?If there was any fuel leaking into the soil these tests should have caught it,? said Allen Biaggi, director of the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection. ?We did wide sweeps looking for (fuels), including oil, diesel, gasoline and jet fuel, and there were no hits on any of them.?
