[Arizona] Louder warplanes expected at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Associated Press Oct. 7, 2002 07:57 AM TUCSON - Davis-Monthan Air Force Base's attack jets are going to be phased out and will be replaced by louder warplanes. City Hall was notified by base officials that the noise zone near the base could nearly double to accommodate future missions involving the new planes. The base now houses the largest fleet of the quietest warplane in the Air Force inventory: the A/OA-10 Thunderbolt II. The twin-engine jets average more than 200 takeoffs, landings and pattern flights every day. But the celebrated attack jet, first introduced at D-M in 1975, is due to be phased out starting later this decade. While no firm plans have been announced, its replacement is expected to be the supersonic Joint Strike Fighter, a futuristic warplane still in development that is faster and considerably louder than the A/OA-10.
