Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Erosion control: Training PLUS Environment |
Much of the discussion of Defense Department's legislative proposals for "Readiness and Range Preservation" centered around the tension between military training requirements and environmental protection. To be sure, there are numerous examples of that conflict. But there are also examples where environmental protection appears to support readiness. Two articles in the Spring, 2002 edition of the Army Environmental Center's Environmental Update describe situations in which range erosion was restricting the ability of troops to train effectively. At both the mechanized training area at Ft. Benning, Georgia and the "Sicily" paratrooper Drop Zone at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, the Army instituted conservation measures that have not only improved habitat but are eliminating the gullies that have interfered with training.
