Calgon touts filtration system Removes chemical contaminant from water Christopher Davis ROBINSON TOWNSHIP — A technology developed by Calgon Carbon Corp. is allowing communities in California to draw potable water from sources previously contaminated by an additive found in rocket fuel. CEO Jim Cederna said the Robinson Township-based company's ISEP system — short for ion separation — is being used by municipal authorities and water providers to remove a chemical called perchlorate from water that flows from the San Gabriel Water Basin, near Los Angeles, to residents in Southern California. When the toxic chemical is ingested by humans, it can affect thyroid hormone production, which can cause illnesses such as Graves' disease and cancer, in addition to impaired neurological development in infants and fetuses, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency.
