Illinois EPA clean-up role at fort has changed BY KENNETH L R. PATCHEN STAFF WRITER A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency official said the agency no longer has a formal role to play in the Fort Sheridan clean-up process. Instead, apparently, the agency has been relegated by U.S. Army decisions to participate only in an advisory role. Army officials disagree with the EPA interpretation and consider environmental officials to be more than just advisers in the clean-up process. The status of the federal environmental agency role came up after a Feb. 26 public hearing by the Fort Sheridan Restoration Advisory Board on the final proposed clean-up for two areas at Fort Sheridan, coal storage area 3 and landfill 5.
