Luke Auxiliary-Field Bill Would Help Shield Base

SURPRISE - Luke Air Force Base is close to getting some needed
protection of Auxiliary Airfield 1, where pilots sometimes fly as low as
150 feet above the ground as they conduct instrument training.

House Bill 2141, which extends many of the same protections Luke has to
the field, called Aux 1, passed a preliminary vote of the full Senate on
Monday and could go to a final vote today.

If approved, the bill would go back to the House for a concurrence vote
to reconcile differences in the House and Senate versions.

The Air Force has been training pilots over Aux 1 in Surprise for more
than 40 years.

But homes have been creeping closer to the field, worrying Luke
officials that noise complaints from nearby homeowners could shut down
the almost 13,000 flights over Aux 1 every year.
