By AMANDA LEHMERT Cape Cod Times April 29, 2004 BOURNE - The Army will pay to hook up three homes to the Bourne Water District because high levels of Royal Demolition Explosive were found in groundwater heading toward the homeowners' private wells. The explosive, RDX, was found at 5.6 parts per billion in a monitoring well at the Massachusetts Military Reservation boundary about 3,000 feet southeast of the homes in the Port of Call subdivision. The Environmental Protection Agency's safe water drinking standard for RDX is 2 parts per billion. The RDX, which contains a chemical used in rat poison, poses no immediate threat to human health in its current location, said Hap Gonser of the Army Groundwater Study Program. "We think it would be preventative to go out and hook these people up." The move comes after a year of state officials and citizens pressuring the Army to connect a home at 5 Foretop Road to the municipal water system or to provide bottled water to the residents after another chemical - perchlorate - was found in their private well. Meanwhile, traces of RDX and perchlorate have turned up in monitoring and test wells at all corners of the base. The chemical is believed to be emanating from the former artillery training impact area on the northern portion of the base after decades of military training and contractor work. ... for the entire story, see http://www.capecodonline.com/cctimes/highrdx29.htm -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org =========================================================== Empower your Team with Remote Access.
