But the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, which did the study, said more monitoring may be done for future burns. And an agency administrator said the Army could be required to do a more thorough clean-up of the buildings - depending on the level of contamination - before setting fire to them. The Army burned 64 buildings at the site - which is being converted to an industrial park - on four occasions, starting Feb. 4. Air testing was done once, during the final burn on March 11. The tests found that elevated levels of lead were present in the air at the plant site, which is between Jeffersonville and Charlestown. Those levels exceeded the federal air-quality standard for lead, which medical studies have linked to neurological defects and developmental delays.
