Lejeune water panelist resigns

A renowned scientist resigned this week from a panel reviewing decisions
made at Camp Lejeune after the discovery of contaminated drinking water
in 1980 and the closure of the contaminated wells in 1985.

William Glaze, a professor and associate dean for research at the Oregon
Health and Sciences University, was one of two people with scientific
backgrounds added to the panel after critics complained about the
original three members' ties to the military or government and their
lack of scientific background.

Former U.S. congressman Ronald Packard, chairman of the panel, said
Tuesday that Glaze was concerned his involvement with two organizations
that might review the panel's findings could eventually create a
conflict of interest. Glaze chairs the Environmental Protection Agency's
Science Advisory Board and sits on the National Academy of Science's
Board of Environmental Studies and Toxicology.

While the panel is conducting a fact-finding review of decisions that
base officials made in light of drinking water regulations and
scientific knowledge available in the early 1980s - not a scientific
study - Packard said there's a small chance the EPA's Science Advisory
Board or the National Academy of Sciences might review the panel's work.

"He could see that they possibly would be asked to do some oversight
work," he said. "I think he could see that perhaps, just perhaps, there
could be a conflict."
