Contamination less than feared

State reports on tests near ammunition plant

Baraboo - Contamination of drinking water near the Badger Army
Ammunition Plant is not as widespread as first thought, according to the
state, but a citizens group says not to draw any conclusions.

Eighty-nine of 91 private wells tested south of the plant have tested
within legal limits for site contaminants, according to the state
Division of Public Health.

The Army collected samples from the wells in March and April after tests
discovered dinitrotoluene, or DNT, classified by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency as a potential carcinogen, in two residential wells
south of the facility in December. DNT was used in the manufacture of
munitions at the plant.
