Perchlorate limits not definitive

CHEMICAL: Massachusetts is more restrictive in assessing the pollutant's
acceptable levels in water.

Massachusetts is taking a more restrictive approach than California in
regulating perchlorate, a rocket-fuel chemical that has polluted
drinking water across the nation, state officials said Friday. 

Both states are working to set an enforceable limit for perchlorate in
drinking water. In preparation, both have done health assessments.
California concluded that it is safe to drink water containing 6 parts
per billion of perchlorate; this week, Massachusetts decided that 1 part
per billion is safe. 

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and 12 outside
scientists concluded that even infants and pregnant women can drink
water with as much as 1 part per billion of perchlorate without adverse
health effects. 

Reviewing the same scientific studies, California health officials in
March set a public health goal that says people can ingest six times
that amount without risk. 

Both states are expected to set standards - an enforceable limit for the
chemical in drinking water - within a year.
