By BILL SANDIFER Washington Daily News (NC) July 2, 2004 RALEIGH -- On Wednesday, the Navy once again made it clear that there's just no place like Washington County. And although the large contingent of Washington and Beaufort county residents attending the federal hearing in Raleigh were likely to agree, it probably would be for different reasons. Eastern District Chief Judge Terrence Boyle heard Assistant U.S. Attorney Norman Acker's arguments in his Raleigh courtroom that the Navy should be allowed to continue land purchases, surveying and wildlife studies even if an upcoming civil lawsuit goes against the Navy, which, in all likelihood, would halt the siting of an outlying landing field in Washington County. Acker said that in addition to the millions the Navy already has spent in purchasing more than 1,200 acres of core OLF property, the Navy is willing to invest millions more, even with the current federal injunction in place. That injunction, even if modified as the Navy has requested, would not allow OLF construction to begin until the resolution of joined civil suits filed by Washington and Beaufort counties and several environmental groups.
