Traces of perchlorate, a chemical found in explosives, fireworks, fertilizer and solid rocket fuel, were detected in the Cote Well, prompting officials to shut it down July 16. It will remain off-line "for a long time," said Water Superintendent Warren Sweetser. The town's other seven wells were unaffected. New tests taken this week showed no trace of the chemical anywhere in the system, said Sweetser, who's been superintendent since 1991.
