Contaminated area three times larger

Bradenton Herald (FL)
July 23, 2004

TALLEVAST - A plume of contamination up to three times larger than the
one identified earlier this year by Lockheed Martin now casts a more
ominous shadow over this small neighborhood of front porches.

Residents learned Thursday that toxic contamination around the former
American Beryllium Co. plant extends farther south and east in greater
concentrations than they were previously told. A reading of the solvent
trichloroethylene at 10,000 times the drinking water standard was the
latest blow.

Tallevast has been plagued with cancers and illnesses at higher rates
than the general population for years, residents say.

They worry that the contamination may force them to leave their homes.
And they don't know whom to believe.

Leaders from the Department of Environmental Protection released test
results publicly at the Mount Tabor Baptist Church.

"It's hard to know what's true and what's not," said Pearl Pitts, a
Tallevast property owner.

State Rep. Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, and representatives from the
offices of U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and U.S. Rep. Katherine
Harris, R-Sarasota, were present, along with officials from the
Environmental Protection Agency, the DEP, the Department of Health,
Lockheed Martin and about 100 Tallevast residents.
