Residents learned Thursday that toxic contamination around the former American Beryllium Co. plant extends farther south and east in greater concentrations than they were previously told. A reading of the solvent trichloroethylene at 10,000 times the drinking water standard was the latest blow. Tallevast has been plagued with cancers and illnesses at higher rates than the general population for years, residents say. They worry that the contamination may force them to leave their homes. And they don't know whom to believe. Leaders from the Department of Environmental Protection released test results publicly at the Mount Tabor Baptist Church. "It's hard to know what's true and what's not," said Pearl Pitts, a Tallevast property owner. State Rep. Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, and representatives from the offices of U.S. Sen.
