Submitted by Gary Walvatne <gwalvatne@comcast.net> Lenny, Based on the map in the Deseret News article, the proposed area for expansion appears to include the former Yellow Jacket Area, which was used for training and testing purposes during World War II and early Cold War years. This area includes formerly used defense sites (FUDS), including the tunnels which were reported used for chemical weapons training (mentioned in the article) for WWII troops who were going to the Pacific Theater. Although Dugway's reasons for expansion may be unclear, it is also possible that the Army recognizes the liabilities associated with the public accessibility to the FUDS. That alone is sufficient reason for Dugway to want to regain control of the area until remediation is conducted.
