County, military pair up for land purchase By GREG HAMBRICK Beaufort Gazette (SC) November 9, 2004 Plans to preserve open space while curbing development pressures around Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort won final approval from the Beaufort County Council on Monday. Under the proposal, the county will pay $155,625 of the $311,250 cost to buy development rights to 69 acres next to the air station in northern Beaufort County. The Department of the Navy will pick up the rest of the price tag, according to the agreement. "It's a win-win situation," Council Vice Chairman W.R. "Skeet" Von Harten said before the council voted 10-0 to approve third reading of the plan. Councilman Peter Lamb didn't attend Monday's meeting. This is the first time the military has partnered with a local government to buy land or development rights for surrounding properties under a new program allowed by the Department of Defense. ...
