County sees great things in old air base By JOEL HOOD MODESTO BEE (CA) November 10, 2004 CROWS LANDING - The sewage system is shot. The lighting fixtures have been torn down. The runways are cracked and worn. But Stanislaus County officials could hardly contain their glee Tuesday at the title transfer ceremony for the old Crows Landing Naval Air Station a few miles south of Patterson. "The West Side is going to be the engine of opportunity, and this air base will be the cornerstone," Supervisor-elect Jim DeMartini said. "I'm anxious to get started. This is where it's going to be at for Stanislaus County." Nestled between drying tomato and broccoli fields, the 1,528-acre air station served as a training site for the Navy during World War II. In subsequent years, it was used for touch-and-go flight operations and paratroop practice. In 1994, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration took control of the facility for research and development....
