Meetings to address plan to burn arsenal buildings Karen Farkas Cleveland Plain Dealer (OH) January 18, 2005 Paris Township - The Army plans to burn more than 100 buildings coated with lead-based paint at the Ravenna Arsenal, which could cause environmental and health problems. The buildings and some equipment are coated with lead-based paints and contain the toxic substance polychlorinated biphenyl, or PCB. Officials will discuss the proposal, which needs approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, at a public meeting Wednesday night. Located on the eastern edge of Portage County between Ravenna and Warren, the arsenal produced and stored artillery and mortar shells for World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. In 1992 the government determined that the arsenal was no longer needed. More than 95 percent of the 21,419 acres was transferred to the Ohio National Guard for training in 1998. The remainder, mostly in the central and eastern area of the arsenal, has known or suspected contamination of the land and buildings, said Mark Patterson, facility manager at the arsenal. ...
