South Waterfront's Zidell segment cleanup costs tagged at $7 million
A family spokesman says the work would be more extensive and costly than
first discussed

On Monday, the state's environmental agency proposed a cleanup plan for
the Zidell family's South Waterfront barge operation that could cost the
Portland family and federal taxpayers $7 million.

Jay Zidell, president of landowner ZRZ Realty, said the cleanup
requirements -- more stringent than the family expected -- could have
"very significant cost implications." But he said the family did not
immediately know whether the plan would inhibit development of high-rise
office and condo buildings as part of a massive city-backed

As a result of a 2001 lawsuit settlement, the federal government would
foot about 35 percent, or $2.45 million, of the cleanup bill. The
Zidells argued in court that because some of the contamination came from
ships they had built for the U.S. Navy, the government had a
responsibility for part of the cleanup cost.
