South Waterfront's Zidell segment cleanup costs tagged at $7 million A family spokesman says the work would be more extensive and costly than first discussed DYLAN RIVERA The Oregonian February 01, 2005 On Monday, the state's environmental agency proposed a cleanup plan for the Zidell family's South Waterfront barge operation that could cost the Portland family and federal taxpayers $7 million. Jay Zidell, president of landowner ZRZ Realty, said the cleanup requirements -- more stringent than the family expected -- could have "very significant cost implications." But he said the family did not immediately know whether the plan would inhibit development of high-rise office and condo buildings as part of a massive city-backed redevelopment. As a result of a 2001 lawsuit settlement, the federal government would foot about 35 percent, or $2.45 million, of the cleanup bill. The Zidells argued in court that because some of the contamination came from ships they had built for the U.S. Navy, the government had a responsibility for part of the cleanup cost. ...
