While much of the discussion of the upcoming base closure round has focused on large bases used primarily by "active" forces, it is likely that Air Force will use this the base closure process to re-align Air National Guard units, co-locating them with active Air Force units. - LS] GFAFB defender questions report on Air Guard Marshall: not so sure of area's inability to take on Fargo fighter wing if deemed necessary By David Dodds Grand Forks Herald (ND) February 25, 2005 The man leading the fight to save Grand Forks' base from what he's called the "mother of all base closure rounds" is questioning findings of a consultant that there's not enough of a recruiting base to move a Fargo-area fighter wing to Grand Forks. John Marshall, a Grand Forks attorney and businessman, said he doesn't want to get into a competition with other North Dakota communities that have bases on the chopping block, but claims out of Fargo by a consultant hired by the local save-the-base committee are hard to believe given current realities of many guardsmen in the state. The Spectrum Group, based in Virginia, said Wednesday that the military should hold off on proposals to relocate Fargo's 119th Fighter Wing of the North Dakota Air Guard to Grand Forks because the Air Guard wouldn't muster the recruits needed to sustain the unit. Spectrum's study compared 60-mile radii recruitment zones around Grand Forks and Fargo. ...
