EPA project will protect river from Butler Mine Tunnel contaminants By Joe Sylvester Wilkes-Barre Citizen's Voice (PA) April 26, 2005 As motor oil and other chemicals lurk beneath the earth in abandoned mines, workers have been quietly working along the riverbank in Pittston to prevent those pollutants from floating downstream. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is overseeing a project to install boom lines and close a mine ventilation borehole to prevent contaminants from flushing out of the Butler Mine Tunnel during heavy rains. The project at the EPA Superfund site near the Fort Jenkins Bridge in Pittston is part of a settlement of a case stemming from the dumping of used oil and other liquid waste into the borehole near a Pittston Township auto garage. ... The nearly 80 responsible parties - companies, individuals and the U.S. Department of Defense, Army, Navy and Air Force - believed to have generated the several million gallons of waste dumped in the borehole next to Hi-Way Auto Service, Route 315, in the late 1970s, will pay the several million dollars for the remedy through a trust fund they formed. ...
