Former missile silos found safe in Chichester By MIKE BONNER Delaware County Times (Chester, PA) June 28, 2005 UPPER CHICHESTER -- "A monumental day in the history of Chichester schools" was how Chichester School Board Vice-President Ed Cardow described the inspection Monday of three former missile silos located beneath the parking lots of Hilltop Elementary School. "This is all part of the process to construct a new elementary school," said Cardow, standing on the site of the future building, a parking lot located approximately 200 feet from the current school. A steel panel that was bolted into the center of the lot had been removed, allowing inspectors to place a ladder inside the opening, formerly an elevator shaft used for carrying Nike missiles during the Cold War. "We have to make sure it's environmentally safe," said Michael Golde, superintendent of Chichester schools. "That's why it's a joint event with representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection, the Army Corps of Engineers, the district's own environmental group (Environmental Control Systems, Inc.), our architect and construction manager, maintenance and facilities people, and school board members and administration." ...
