Birds and jets share same turf By BILL SANDIFER Washington Daily News (NC) August 14, 2005 The East Coast of the United States, on the ground and in the air, has become increasingly crowded with often competing interests compelled to share turf. One relationship, arguably, hasn't fared as well as others: birds and aircraft. Increasing aircraft traffic and expanding bird populations -- bolstered by successful conservation efforts -- have turned the friendly skies into occasional combat zones for both military and civilian flights. One particularly successful conservation effort was the establishment of Pocosin Lakes Wildlife Refuge, a key stop on the Atlantic Flyway, the Interstate Highway for migratory waterfowl. However, like some of the creatures that use the refuge, the refuge itself was recently put on an endangered list of its own. ...
