Submitted by Scott Allen <scott.j.allen@juno.com> The Justice Department has a clear conflict of interest when it comes to investigating possible criminal wrongdoing by federal employees regarding the Camp Lejeune contamination. In addition to being charged with investigating possible criminal wrongdoing by the government at Camp Lejeune, the lawyers at DOJ will be responsible for defending the government against civil lawsuits filed by the victims of the contamination at Camp Lejeune. Thus, DOJ was investigating its own client to determine whether any crimes were committed. If DOJ had determined that crimes were committed, its ability to effectively defend the government against lawsuits by victims would have been seriously undermined. Thus, the results of the criminal investigation should not surprise anyone. I would have been shocked if DOJ found that criminal wrongdoing had occurred.
