10,000 gallons of fuel spilled in C-5 crash State says prompt cleanup will avert threat to soil, groundwater By JEFF MONTGOMERY The News Journal (DE) May 4, 2006 An estimated 10,000 gallons of aviation fuel -- more than a tanker truckload -- spilled during the crash of a $175 million C-5 cargo jet at Dover Air Force Base on April 3, contaminating soil and threatening groundwater. Other facts surrounding the accident remained elusive, however, one month after the plane -- the largest military aircraft in the U.S. fleet -- hit the ground while attempting an emergency landing. During a briefing Wednesday at the crash site, military officials declined to discuss any findings from the investigation. Estimates of the spill size came from a state environmental official. ...
