Pantex eyes possible land buyout 2,200 acres wanted to clean groundwater By Jim McBride Amarillo Globe News (TX) August 25, 2006 The Pantex plant is eyeing a plan to buy about 2,200 acres of land and water rights east of Pantex to clean up contaminated groundwater threatening the Ogallala Aquifer. The off-site pollution exceeds "health-based" levels, but the proposed land buy would grant Pantex officials access to contaminated perched groundwater for future cleanup and prevent Ogallala contamination, a state environmental official said. The perched aquifer contaminant plume seeping from Pantex to the south and east includes RDX, a high explosive used in nuclear weapons, hexavalent chromium, a toxic chemical made infamous by the movie "Erin Brockovich," and other contaminants. ...
