Military facility sparks wildfires
Are cities too close to Williams?

Over several hot and smoky days five years ago, Ken Fortie watched helicopters sweep overhead, water splashing over the sides of buckets held underneath, toward a carpet of fire, crawling north toward his Riverton home.

The July 2001 blaze - flames of which licked the fence lines of some homes in Riverton and Bluffdale - was sparked by soldiers disposing of smoke grenades at the nearby Camp Williams Military Reservation. Over the past 11 years, at least four major fires started at the National Guard training area have threatened homes in nearby developments - including one this week that began during an artillery firing exercise.

Some of Utah's fastest growing communities surround the north and south perimeter of Camp Williams, which straddles the border of Utah and Salt Lake counties.

Military and civilian officials say now, more than ever, they need to work together to prevent disaster.
